Achieving your Doctorate in Education

Checklists and Questions to consider for Achieving your Doctorate in Education

Achieving your Doctorate in Education

I’ve been reading an excellent book called Achieving your doctorate in education by Hilary Burgess, Sandy Sieminski and Lore Arthur. Even though the book title is for a doctorate in education, I think this book is extremely relevant for all researchers. The book contains checklists and questions for you to consider. Right at the start of the book, it asks four questions:

1. Why am I doing the research?
2. What is the need for this research?
3. Where will the research lead?
4. What are the issues I wish to address and/or the debates to which I wish to contribute.

When I get the time, I’ll put my answers into a blog post.
On page 15, more questions are asked:

What is / are my research questions?

What are the ethical issues I need to consider?

What relevant investigations and findings have been carried out by other researchers?

How does my research build on the work of other researchers interested in the area I intend to focus on?

What are the main conceptual frameworks and theories that are liekly to aid my analysis of data?

What justification can I offer for my choice of research strategy and methods of data collection?

When will data collection and analysis take place?

The book covers everything you need to consider and I find it an excellent reference book covering literature review, ethics, theoretical frameworks, methodological considerations, collecting and analysing data and the writing and examining process. It’s also useful to answer the questions it poses, in preparation for your viva voca
